A mural can create an environment in which to relax or provide an escape from the pressures of the outside world, transporting the viewer to anywhere that they care to travel. It could depict Mediterranean vistas, seascapes and skies, classic or rustic scenes or beautifully landscaped gardens.

Trompe l'oeil is the French term meaning to 'trick the eye', blurring the line between fantasy and reality. Used well, trompe l'oeil can open up a small or 'dead' space. Subjects could include false windows, doorways, bookcases or perhaps a tented ceiling. Paint effects such as 'faux' marbling or stonework can provide effective architectural details.
